Thermally Modified Wood

Naturally enhanced wood with improved durability, stability, and appearance

Thermally Modified Wood (TMW) is wood that has been heat-treated in a controlled, low-oxygen environment to improve its durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to biological decay. No chemicals are introduced during the process.

Modern high quality thermally modified wood TMW is produced by International Thermowood Associations’s (ITWA) certified process, ThermoWood®. ThermoWood® products are produced under the independent quality control system audited by accredited notified body. Licensed members of ITWA can use the registered trademark for their products. ThermoWood® is a wood material produced by using natural methods, heat and steam. Thermal modification improves the wood’s technical properties and ThermoWood® is non-toxic, dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and resin free. It can be used inside or outdoors, in any climate.

Modern production process with constant innovation allows customization and tailored recipes for any wood species. With technology partners like Jartek there is always a fit to your need what comes to suitable thermal wood modification solution. Jartek is a kiln manufacturer member of ITWA.

Proof of quality. ThermoWood® is a patented production process and a registered trademark, that may only be used by licensed producer members of International ThermoWood Association (ITWA). These producers, their products and operations are monitored annually by a third-party auditor. Premium quality TMW products carry the ThermoWood® trademark.

Benefits of TMW

TMW made by ThermoWood® process has excellent durability and stability properties. It is dimensionally stable with reduced swelling and shrinkage with improved resistance to decay and moisture. Also, it is resin-free material with consistent color throughout the wood. With reduced thermal conductivity, ideal for cladding, saunas, and outdoor structures. Suitable for use in varying and demanding climate conditions.
Thermally Modified Wood
  • Durability

TMW is resistant to demanding weather conditions. It is through colored and can have decades long service life.

  • Dimensional stability

The wood structure is modified during the TMW process, reducing the risk of warping, cupping, cracking, swelling, and shrinkage.

  • Biological Resistance

Wood chemical structure is change so that there is no nutrients for fungi or insects. TMW is thus resistant to rot, decay, mold , and pests.

  • Aesthetic versatility

TMW is through colored and comes in various color schemes from light to dark brown. It ages beautifully to shades of gray.

  • Interior and exterior applications

Only sky is the limit in applications of TMW. The most common ones are decking, cladding, facades, paneling, flooring, furniture and joinery work

Key features

Features that make TMW a multi-use, sustainable alternative to chemically treated wood e.g. pressure impregnated wood and tropical hard wood are results of a proper modern manufacturing process compliant with ITWA’s ThermoWood® process. Features range from aesthetic to chemical, and physical ones resulting in multiple end use benefits.

  • Low Equilibrium Moisture Content

Low EMC means reduced swelling and shrinkage, and resistance to fungi.

  • No added chemicals

TMW is non-toxic, sustainable, fully recyclable, and safe.

  • Through colored

TMW can be sanded, planed, and worked without losing its color

  • Modified molecular structure

For dimensional stability, and resistance to biological degradation.
