ESG
We support mills and TMW producers in unlocking the potential of lumber through solutions that improve safety, material flow, and the lifetime value of wood. We consider the economic, social, and environmental impact of everything we design and aim to be a responsible partner throughout each project.
Our Footprint
In 2024, we completed our first verified carbon footprint calculation through the Finland Chamber of Commerce’s Climate Program. The fuel and electricity used in our own operations generated 99.6 tons of CO₂ emissions (Scope 1 & 2) – this is now our baseline for improvement.
Jartek’s Chair of the Board, Tuuli Luoranen, summarizes our view: “We see sustainability first and foremost as an opportunity – a way to build competitive advantage and create value together with our customers and partners.”
We have also joined the Climate Community, a national program that helps companies deepen climate work and prepare for evolving EU reporting requirements.
Environmental Impact
Our kilns use only heat and steam to create long-lasting, stable wood without chemicals. This makes thermally modified wood safe for people, safe for recycling, and a natural fit for the circular economy.
-
Cleaner material
No preservatives or biocides – the material stays non-toxic from production to end-of-life reuse.
-
Carbon Stored Longer
Durable wood keeps carbon locked away for decades, helping reduce the need for higher-emission materials.
-
Efficient Production
Our mechanics and digital automation improve consistency, reduce waste, and optimize energy use. New designs can also integrate heat‑recovery concepts.
Material Efficient Lumber Handling
We design lumber handling solutions with one core principle in mind: treat wood as the valuable material it is. Our automation and line designs focus on controlled material flow and consistent handling, helping mills make better use of every board processed.
-
Preserving Material Value
Well planned material flow keeps lumber stable as it moves through sorting, drying, and further processing. By reducing unnecessary transfers and manual intervention, we help maintain surface quality and dimensional accuracy so more wood reaches its intended grade and use.
-
Less Waste, More Yield
Integrated green and dry sorting, planing, and packaging solutions help reduce re handling and production disturbances. This supports consistent quality and lowers the risk of damage or downgrades, improving yield from each cubic meter of lumber.
-
Longer System Lifecycles
Our modular solutions and modernization services allow mills to upgrade performance without replacing entire lines. This supports longer equipment lifetimes and responsible use of materials while adapting existing facilities to evolving production needs.
Innovation & R&D
As a founding member of the International ThermoWood® Association (ITWA), we help develop and maintain global standards for thermal modification.
Our R&D focuses on:
-
Smarter kiln cycles and stable production
-
Automation that supports safer operator work
-
More efficient use of energy and resources
Governance: Transparency & Trust
-
Certified Processes
We supply technology that meets ITWA’s strict requirements, protecting the integrity of the ThermoWood® trademark.
-
Prepared for Regulation
We follow EU sustainability reporting developments closely, including ESG and CSRD frameworks.
-
Responsible Raw Materials
We support the use of PEFC and FSC-certified wood, reinforcing responsible sourcing throughout the value chain.
